Handicap Aids - A Variety To Choose From
There may come a time in a persons life when they or a loved one needs a handicap aid due to a temporary or permanent injury or illness. Depending on the nature of the disability, what constitutes a handicap aid can become an almost endless list. This article will address five such handicap aids which may be more generic in use than some of the others found.
Walking aids or canes, crutches, and walkers are the first to come to mind as a form of handicap aid. There are several in each category which are designed to meet specific needs of the patient. Single point canes are the entry level of walking aids and are considered for temporary use. If the user anticipates per-eminent or long-term use, the quad cane is more practical and certainly more stable. Crutches are needed if the injury or disability requires weight to be taken off the lower limbs. There are under the arm crutches and forearm crutches, each offering a different level of comfort. Finally, the walker is available for greater stability. There are two basic walker options, one without wheels and one with wheels. Even that is not an exclusive list since one can have a walker with 4 wheels or 2 wheels. Walkers with 4 wheels come with hand brakes. Two and 4 wheel walkers come with accessories to increase comfort and carrying capacity for the user.
Wheel chairs are the next level of handicap aid which comes to mind. There are many kinds of wheel chairs from a transportation wheel chair which provides 4 small wheels and used to move a person around the house or from house to vehicle. These are narrower and lighter than a standard wheel chair. The standard wheel chair comes in several different configurations from sports models which are made from light metals or composite materials to ones with specialized backs for those patients who are totally helpless. But the standard wheel chair is ideal for patients who can propel themselves. They have options like removable armrests and leg rests height adjustments to allow the patient to propel themselves with their feet.
The hospital bed can be one of the most beneficial handicap aids when the patient requires assistance while in the bed. The hospital bed is designed to prevent injury to the caregiver. Although, the comfort of the patient is also to be kept in mind. Hospital beds come in three different styles. The manual style is one in which the head and foot adjustments and height of the mattress are adjusted by hand cranks. Next is the semi-electric bed which only the head and foot adjustments are electric and the height of the mattress is manual lift. Then of course the fully electric bed. For patient comfort the mattress can either be a foam mattress or coil spring mattress. Other accessories include over-bed tables for setting food, drinks and other items which give the patient a degree of independence. A trapeze can be added to assist in transferring the patient in and out of bed, plus in raising the patient higher on the mattress.
There are many handicap aids, these are some of the most common needed and found in the home of the infirm.
