Handicap Lift - Choosing The One For Your Needs

When it comes to the handicap lift there is no limit to how a person can be lifted. Whether from their bed to a chair, or from one level of the home to another, or from their individual mobility device to their vehicle. Any form of handicap lift is available.

The Hoyer lift is the means for lifting a person who is bed bound from their bed to a chair or other location. The Hoyer lift is used when the individual is unable to assist in their own transfer, or are too heavy for the caregiver to safely transfer them from one location to another. These lifts come in manual to power assisted operations. They also provide slings which support the whole body for those unable to assist in their own transfer, or a simple seat sling for less handicapped individuals. They also have wheels for moving from one room to another. These wheels lock in place to prevent unwanted movement when the transfer is taking place.

For the individual who wants a handicap lift to safely go up or downstairs, there are stair lifts which install in at least 36 staircase width. They provide easy installation with no special electrical wiring. The individual has a contoured seat for comfort and arm and foot rests for safety. Some come with optional seat belts. Weight capacity is around 500 lbs. Some other features are the seat faces downstairs when going up and down, and the seat will swivel 180 degrees to allow safe exit of the chair when the destination is reached. The motor is quiet and the lift operates on nylon wheels. Most feature smooth stop and start features.

Elevators are available to be installed in new construction or existing homes. These means of transfer are more expensive than other forms of lifting, but offer greater weight carrying capacities and can lift more than one person.

When the wheel chair bound individual needs a handicap lift to go further than their home via an automobile, SUV or van, there are options to accommodate their wheel chair or motorized scooter. These forms of lifts are either to lift the individual and their conveyance into the vehicle. Once the individual is in their vehicle, the conveyance is then stored in the back of the vehicle or the vehicles trunk. In the case the lift for SUV's and trucks, experiences a power failure, they haves manual cranks so the handicapped individual is not stranded without means to egress or ingress their vehicle. These lifts all have a weight limit, their motors are maintenance free. They are easily installed. Those which carry the conveyance on the back of the vehicle, are installed via the trailer hitch, which limits them to SUV and pick up trucks. Those used for cars and vans are easily set up. They have automated controls for lifting. They fold easily for storage.

Today, there is little reason a disabled person has to remain bed bound, if they so desire to continue to live life to the fullest. The different types of handicap lift apparatus available, gives the individual mobility that was not readily available a few years ago.
