Handicap Vehicles - Convert Any Car Into One

There is no reason a handicapped person cannot drive his / her own vehicle, by making it a handicap vehicle. A side entry ramp will allow the handicapped person access to the drivers seat and hand controls will allow him or her to operate the accelerator and brake. Assistive seats and steps allow for infirm family members to gain easier access to the vehicle than otherwise.

There are two types of entry systems from which to choose when making a vehicle a handicap vehicle. The rear entry systems would be limited to the van-style vehicle. Rear entry systems are used primarily in commercial handicap vehicles which provide public transportation such as taxi and hotel conveyances. But can also be used by those handicapped people who could not drive there own vehicle and therefore would not necessarily need to have van access disabled parking features. The rear entry system prevents the handicapped person from having access to the front seats.

Both entry systems limit seating capacity, in vans, to 6 passengers. Both allow for two wheelchairs to be loaded into the handicap vehicle. Only the side entry system is an automatically operated system. Both systems will lower the floor dimensions by 10”. Significant other modifications will occur when either system is installed. However, warranties, which resemble the warranties of automobile manufacturers, are available with entry systems.

Entry systems and hand operated accelerator and braking controls are not the only systems available for the complete handicap vehicle. Assistive seats and steps are also available. These seats allow for greater access to the front passenger seat by swiveling out and tilting down to allow the passenger ease of entry and exit. Controls on the inside of the vehicle allow for the seat to swivel and tilt. The seat can be used as a regular seat when the assistive feature is not needed. A motorized assistive step may be installed on the passenger side of any van or truck to assist ones entry or exit. A switch on the inside door activates the step.

Hand controls can be used on the handicap vehicle to aid the paraplegic with his/ her own independence. Four different function styles are available, depending on the degree of handicap of the user. Some quadriplegic users may also be able to use this device. Push is always for braking, while the second option is for accelerating. push / right angle, push / pull, push/ rock, and push / rotate are the options on these devices.

For those who may be right leg amputees or have the inability to press down on the gas pedal, there is a left foot gas pedal appliance which can be installed under the steering wheel to allow for continued driving. This appliance does not aid in the use of the brake. It does not affect the original use of the gas pedal.

The standard vehicle can be modified to become a handicap vehicle and allow the paraplegic to maintain their mobility and still safely operate a motor vehicle. Also, a vehicle may be modified for families who may have either a paraplegic family member or an elderly family member who needs assistance to gain easy entry into their vehicle.
