Handicapped Scooters - Helpful And Full Of Fun

Handicapped scooters differ from wheelchairs in that the wheelchairs are made for a more severely handicapped person than is the scooter. From the construction of the chair, to the manual controls, the differences are noticeable.

Handicapped scooters are found in grocery stores and theme parks. They are available to be purchased for personal use as well. The features found on the commercial handicapped scooters are used on those for personal use, since its those features which have stood up to the abuse of being used by the public which are strong selling points for the handicapped.

Handicapped scooters come in all sizes and price ranges. Some can be disassembled for easy storage and portability, while others are more robust and require a scooter carrier for transportability. Regardless of their price or dis-assembly capacity the features found on them are similar. The consumer will have to know what the scooter will be used for so as to get the right kind of scooter and not purchase less than what is needed.

Some scooters are for home use only and others can be used for outdoor applications as well. Some have a travel radius of only 10 miles while others will travel for up to 25 miles, depending on the speed employed. Ground clearance is another matter of consideration. The lowest ground clearance among the handicapped scooters surveyed was 1.5” while the greatest ground clearance was 5”. The tires which come on these scooters may require occasional checking for air pressure, while others are solid tires requiring no maintenance. Turning radius is another consideration, especially if the scooter is to be used primarily indoors.

If the scooter is to be used outdoors, knowing that some some of the scooters have a pretty good angle of climb with 8% being the greatest among those surveyed, while others are pretty limited, as little as 3%. Lets turn to safety issues. Some come with headlight and directional lights. Some have bumpers. What about speed of these scooters? Some crawled along at 3.2 mph while two surveyed could haul it at a whopping 8 mph. All had the capacity to adjust their speed.

Now, lets turn to the comfort of the seat. Most of the seats are captain chairs, some of these chairs will recline. Most swiveled to allow the rider easy entrance and exit of the vehicle. Some have head rests and adjustable arm rests. The captains chairs were all covered with material which was water resistant for both incontinent people and outdoor use. Yet, there is at least one of the scooters reviewed which had a bench seat. All of the handicapped scooters used a tiller method for steering which is ideal for those who have limited mobility in their hand and arms. Most of the scooters were three wheeled configurations, while there were a few which sported 4 wheels. They all have comfortable suspension on all wheels, which makes for a more comfortable time in the scooter. All of the scooters were fitted with a front basket for ease of carrying items the handicapped person may want or need.
